Sarah, in all of her infinite wisdom, wanted to wait till 2022 to get engaged. I saw that as a challenge. The same challenge we all play when racing Google Maps’ estimated arrival time to our destination. As history shows, I won! Sarah did, in fact, guess my first proposal idea down to the corny phrase to ask for her hand. So, I made the plan of all plans. I called a meeting of the friend group. We schemed to have our Christmas card pictures done at the beach on December 5th and brunch with the friends to follow. I had all the details handled. Ring? Custom made. Flowers? With a friend to bring. Champagne? Purchased 2 bottles to celebrate… but so did everyone else. So we had 9 bottles of champagne for 8 people. Hiding the ring from Sarah? Easy. Underwear drawer for the win. Hiding the ring from Sarah at the beach? Easier. Gave it to my man Dan and he brought it. Everyone had their task and all played their part flawlessly. With a simple pass behind Sarah’s back, Dan gave me the key to the rest of our life. Now… Let’s party!
Her Version:
Mike wanted to send out holiday cards for the 2021 holiday season, but we didn’t have any good photos of ourselves. He planned a beach brunch with some friends on a surprisingly warm day and asked our friend Sara to bring her camera to capture a few photos for the holiday card (or so I thought). I really had no suspicions, until he asked if I planned to paint my nails. However, I had accidentally guessed (and therefore ruined) his initial proposal plan, so I didn’t say anything, even though asking about my nails was a little weird. The day before the brunch, our friends Justin and Maddie got engaged! That completely convinced me that we weren’t getting engaged at the beach the next day. The day of the brunch, we picked up Sara and made our way to the beach. They both seemed so nervous! This is when I started questioning if he was about to pop the question. At the beach, Sara took a few “practice shots” to get the lighting right. I thought she was taking this a little too seriously for just a holiday card - warning sign #3. I asked my friend Hanna if it looked like Mike had a ring box in his pocket. She said his pockets looked normal and that I was being a little crazy. She completely convinced me that Sara and Mike just both really care about holiday cards. Little did I know, Hanna is an incredible liar. We took some pictures as a group, one with our housemate Dan, and then started to take pictures for our “holiday cards”. That’s when he bent down and said “Sarah, will you marry me?”. I was somehow shocked, but also not surprised at all (in fact, I think I said “I was right” before I even said yes!). I nodded, teared up, and held out my hand. He put the ring on me. We took some beautiful photos and had a wonderful brunch, followed by some beach bar hopping and a delicious dinner. It was the perfect proposal, and I am so glad I ruined his Plan A!
